How to make Canva artwork print ready

Canva has made graphic design more accessible to businesses of every size.

Whether you're creating business cards, flyers, posters or promotional materials, its templates and straightforward editing tools make it possible to produce artwork without specialist design software.

However, before you send your design to a professional printer, it's worth checking a few important details.

A design that looks good on screen isn't necessarily ready for print.

Here's how to prepare your Canva artwork for professional printing.

1. Choose the correct document size
Start by checking that your Canva design matches the finished size of the product you want to print.

For example, an A5 leaflet, A4 poster and roller banner all have different dimensions.

If your design is created at the wrong size, resizing it later may affect the layout, text and image quality.

Whenever possible, select the correct dimensions before starting your design.

2. Check your images
Images need sufficient resolution to reproduce clearly at the intended print size.

Be particularly careful when using small images downloaded from websites or taken from screenshots.
An image that looks sharp on your phone may not reproduce well when enlarged.

If your design contains a logo, use a suitable high-quality file wherever possible.

3. Understand bleed
Bleed is an extra area of artwork extending beyond the final cutting edge of a printed product.

It's particularly important when backgrounds, photographs or colours extend to the edge of a leaflet, business card or flyer.

Without sufficient bleed, slight variations during trimming can leave unwanted white edges.

Where your product requires bleed, enable the appropriate option when exporting your Canva artwork and ensure your design extends into that area.

The precise requirements depend on the product and printer, so check the specifications before exporting.

4. Keep important information away from the edges
Even when bleed is correctly set up, important text, logos and contact details should be positioned safely inside the finished dimensions.

This is known as the safe area.

Avoid placing essential information too close to the edge, where it could be trimmed or appear cramped.

5. Export the right file
For many professional printing applications, a PDF is an appropriate format.

Canva offers PDF export options, including PDF Print. Depending on your design and the printer's requirements, you may need to enable bleed and crop marks.

However, crop marks aren't required for every job, and some printers prefer files without them.

Always check the specifications for your particular product before exporting.

6. Proofread everything
Before sending your artwork, check:
•    Spelling and grammar.
•    Telephone numbers and email addresses.
•    Website addresses.
•    Logo placement.
•    Image quality.
•    Alignment and spacing.
•    Prices, dates and promotional details.

It's much easier to correct an error before printing than after your order has been produced.

AI artwork and professional design

Can you print AI-generated artwork? Here's what you need to know.

Artificial intelligence has made it easier than ever to create images, graphics and marketing materials. With tools such as ChatGPT and other AI image generators, businesses can produce creative ideas in minutes without necessarily needing professional design software.

But what happens when you want to turn that image into something physical?
Whether you're planning a poster, leaflet, banner, business card or exhibition display, there are a few things to consider before sending your AI-generated artwork to print.

At Middlesbrough Printing, we understand that creating an image on screen and preparing artwork for professional printing are two different things.

1. Check the image resolution
One of the most common problems with AI-generated images is resolution.
An image might look perfectly sharp on your computer or phone but become blurry or pixelated when printed at a larger size.

This is particularly important for posters, banners and other large-format products.
The resolution you need depends on the dimensions of the finished product, how close people will stand to it and the printing process being used.

If your image doesn't contain enough detail, simply enlarging the file won't necessarily improve the final result.

2. Make sure the colours are suitable for printing
Colours displayed on a screen can look different when reproduced in print.
Your monitor uses light to display colours, while printing uses inks or other colourants on a physical surface. The materials and printing process can also affect the result.

Professional artwork preparation helps manage these differences and reduces the risk of unexpected colours.

3. Check the text and details
AI-generated images can sometimes contain distorted lettering, inconsistent details or elements that don't make sense.

These issues might be easy to overlook on a screen, particularly if you're concentrating on the overall design.

Before printing, check every word, logo, telephone number, web address and other important detail.

For business marketing materials, accuracy matters.

4. Prepare the correct file
Different printing products have different requirements.
Your artwork may need the correct dimensions, bleed, safe margins, fonts and an appropriate PDF or image format.

A file that's suitable for social media isn't automatically ready for a professionally printed leaflet or banner.

5. Know when to involve a professional designer
AI is a useful tool for exploring ideas and generating visual concepts. You don't necessarily need to abandon an image you've created yourself.
Sometimes, a few adjustments are enough. Other projects may benefit from professional retouching, layout improvements or recreating elements as vector artwork.

The important thing is making sure the finished design does its job.

Let us help you get your artwork print ready
